RIP Old Man Cat

Losing a pet hurts. Sometimes I think it can hurt more than losing a person. I can say that because I have lost a lot of people in my life, some very large roles in life. Pets are part of our every single day. Even if they are small, their presence is huge in our lives and in our homes. This week I walk around a very empty house because over the weekend we lost our beloved cat. Now let me tell you..this cat was a nightmare. He was the most moody, mangy, miserable old man cat you could come across. AND he was only 6 years old! Despite is pissy attitude, he would only purr for us, only let us hold him, only trusted us. He was our cat and we loved him. And with all his pissy ways, he loved us too.

We had to put him to sleep. It was sad, and devastating, and a complete shock. It was not what we expected when we woke up that morning. He got very sick, very quick and to make him not suffer it was the right thing to do.

His last few moment in the car with us before going to the vet he was purring in his laundry basket in the front seat, unable to move or walk in anyway. It was sad, but we smiled on the inside knowing he was still happy with us in that moment. We were saying our goodbyes, and his little last purrs (and he wasnt the purring type of cat at all), was his way of saying, love you guys too.

I type this in tears as I miss my little old man cat trotting around. And with two adults, a six month old, and a 5 year old dog our house is far from physcially empty. But we sure do feel the void this guy left us with.

Nice to Meet You Monday #8 Grand Finale!

Let's give another warm welcome to my 8th edition and final edition of the Nice to Meet you Monday of the 2012 series! I am really loving getting to know all these ladies! I hope you guys have enjoyed reading along!

Check out Jenna ! Mrs. N at Step by Step!!

1. Describe yourself in 10 words or less.
Mom, wife, sincere, honest, loyal, loving, funny, smart, witty, & fun-loving

2. What made you get into blogging? And inspired your blog’s name?
I started my blog when my (new) husband was deployed and we spent our first year of marriage apart. Originally my blog was called “Surviving the Distance” because, well, that is what we were trying to do at the time. When my husband came home on r&r he ended up getting custody of his kids and overnight I became a geographically single mom of 4 kids (aka The Herd).

After we survived our first deployment and we were getting ready to PCS (move) to North Carolina (my husband was in Kentucky and the herd and I were in Minnesota at the time) to be together as a family, I needed a new blog title.  Since we are a blended family, I came up with my current name “Step by Step”.  Step by Step is to chronicle our life (the good, the bad, the randomness) as a blended family.

3. What do you enjoy most about the blog world? Have you been a part of it for long or just starting out?
My favorite part of the blog world is getting to meet my fellow bloggers. I also love to learn new things, and I am constantly inspired by the amazing blogs I have discovered.  I could work on executing said inspiration a bit more, but my follow through isn’t always there. I do have a herd, so I believe that is a perfectly acceptable excuse!

I have been a part of bloggyland going on 2 years this July. I am not a daily, shoot sometimes not even weekly, blogger. But I do my best to make sure that I post once a month, at a minimum.

4. What do you find yourself blogging about most of the time?
Honestly, I have been in quite the rut lately. I find myself doing link ups trying to get my creative juices flowing. I do love linkup parties though. They’re so much fun and it’s a great way for me to find new blogs.

When I’m not in a rut, I find myself blogging about the herd, Mr. N.,  Family stuff

5. If you had an endless budget…what store would you spend hours shopping in?
Target…hands down! It is rare that I can go into that store and spend under $100. They have the cutest clothes for the herd, houseware, electronics, make up (Hello Essie!), and even food! Everything this mom of 4 could possibly need!

6. How do you spend a typical Sunday?
Typically on Sundays everyone is [usually] up by 9:00 a.m. We feed the herd breakfast, Mr. N. hibernates in his Man Cave while his coffee brews, while I boot up my computer to see what new secrets have been posted on PostSecrets.com. The herd will either go upstairs and play, or watch tv for about an hour and then its time to clean! Yay! Sunday is cleaning day at our house and everyone contributes, but not always happily lol After the cleaning portion of the day is done, the herd reads for 20 minutes and they can go outside and play, or play video games (we tend to save this activity for rainy days, no need to waste sunshine!) Most Sundays are pretty relaxed, we tend to hang around the house and spend time together as a family.

7. What song would be the theme song to your life, right now?
“God Gave me You” by Blake Shelton. Absolutely love this song.  (Youtube link for his official video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nCf2PoTuh4Q&ob=av2n )

8. Tell us about your absolute must-have item in your closet.
My absolute must have in my closet, is my nail polish collection! Nail polish is the perfect accessory! My collection is currently at an impressive 200 bottles. Mr. N. doesn’t understand the obsession, but he doesn’t complain.

9. Let us know some of your favorites. Favorite food, favorite book, favorite movie, favorite TV show, favorite color, favorite place to visit (city, state, country whatever works!)…now go!
Favorite Food: Italian.. specifically pizza!
Favorite Book: I don’t have a favorite book. I don’t read books more than once. I do, however, have a favorite author and that would be Mr. John Grisham!
Favorite Movie: Pretty Woman…hello Julia Roberts!
Favorite TV Show: F.R.I.E.N.D.S.
Favorite Color: I love blue
Favorite Place to Visit: Well my favorite place to visit now is Home! That would be Minnesota, the Twin Cities (St. Paul/Minneapolis) area. I didn’t know how much I truly loved Minnesota until I didn’t live there anymore.

10. If you could switch lives with ANYONE for the day, who would it be and
why?
Oh my gosh I would totally be Brittney Spears! She is gorgeous, talented, an amazing dancer, and a down to earth woman.  She had some ups and downs, but that is the case for everyone, she just had to live it in front of the whole world.  Regardless, she is just amazing and I love her!

11. What inspires you? {this can be about anything…blogging, life, crafts, etc..}
I am inspired by my beautiful herd. They are still so innocent in their view of the world and sometimes I wish they would stay young and innocent forever. They are so full of energy and zest. They find the beauty in the little things. I feel they keep me grounded and young at heart. They remind me to not take myself too seriously and to laugh. They are definitely a handful at times, but they’re my handful! I am so proud to be their mom.

12. What is your favorite trend for the upcoming spring/summer months?
Since I am a nail polish addict! I am really excited for all the new polish collections that are coming out. It looks like neon is going to be pretty huge this summer! I cannot wait!

13. Name a product you use daily and would recommend to your best friend.
Why, (shameless plug) Scentsy of course! In all seriousness though, I do use my Scentsy warmers on a daily basis. I love to have a good smelling house, especially with 4 kids, 2 cats, and an abundance of Army gear my house is always smelling good! If you’re interested in checking out Scentsy, my website is www.jennaniemi.scentsy.us

14. What are your favorite types of blogs to read? (i.e. fashion, home decorating, crafting, running, cooking, etc…
I follow a lot of Military Spouse bloggers and, as of recently, Nail polish and Nail Art blogs. I truly love to read all different types of blogs.

15. We all like to find some good new reads, so please share your daily reads! Give a shout out to your top 3 favorite blogs.

How much do your jeans tell about you?

My jeans say...your a new mom so you need "mid-waist" to flatten that section out, you need curvy...well,  because there are just more than their used to be...and you need a dark wash. Nothing white is going on this a$$.

Say hello to my new favorite brand of jeans.

Yes that's right..you read correctly.  Target!

I have some $100+ jeans in my closet...and I got some $10 clearance jeans in there too. I don't discriminate. And I love me a good deal.

Merona Boot cut Jean Fit 4 (Mid Waist/Curvy) Dark Wash
Buy Here

I love these jeans...they wash well, the color doesn't fade (but be careful they do bleed in the laundry), the shape does not distort and they have to be the most comfortable pair of jeans I own...especially at the moment!

They have quite the variety of styles, colors, shapes and sizes...but these are what works for me. And with my ever changing, 6 month post pregnancy body my sizes are constantly changing and I hate to spend a ton of money on new clothes.  So I have been 100% going the budget route! But even when I am back to my pre-pregnancy self...I am heading straight to Target and buying these in my "real size"!  (I say real because i would like to think this current size is a completely fake, over exaggerated number)

And really, what better way to buy jeans, but to pick up shampoo, paper towels, cat food, baby wipes, and a new pair of jeans in one trip. As a new Mom...that is my kind of shopping!

Nice to Meet You Monday! #7

Let's give another warm welcome to my 7th edition of the Nice to Meet you Monday of the 2012 series! I am really loving getting to know all these ladies! I hope you guys have enjoyed reading along!

Now meet Lia from Too Big for my Britches!

1. Describe yourself in 10 words or less.
Southern. Barefoot beach dweller (in my dreams). Reader. Choosing joy.

2. What made you get into blogging? And inspired your blog’s name?
My Bachelor’s degree is in Creative Writing, where I specialized in creative nonfiction. As the landscape of publishing changes, and some bloggers are coming to be considered journalists, that’s what blogging is nowadays. It’s less about navel gazing (though we all do some of that), and more about community and entertainment. So that. That’s what got me (back) into blogging. A desire to participate.
too big for my britches represents the transition I’m currently going through, individually and as a part of two families: the one I was born into, and the one I’m fashioning for myself. I just recently turned 25, and it seems my life is changing at warp speed, and I’m not entirely sure how, and when, I turned into an adult. So, in my mind, I’m too big for my britches.
3. What do you enjoy most about the blog world? Have you been a part of it for long or just starting out?
I have no reservations in saying my favorite part about the blog world is the community, and the possibility of interactions with people around the country and the world, nearly impossible otherwise.
This is my first, serious, dedicated attempt at blogging. If I dug, I could find several failed attempts, relegated to the Internet graveyard after only a short time.

4. What do you find yourself blogging about most of the time?
At the moment, my blog is kind of sporadic. I photo-blog about fashion (by way of Polyvore). I blog about the Publishing industry, of which I am a part. At the time of this writing, I’m constructing a weekend recap blog. I blog about food.
To sum it all up, I blog about life.

5. If you had an endless budget…what store would you spend hours shopping in?
Barnes & Noble. (And maybe a little Urban Outfitters, but mostly B&N.)

6. How do you spend a typical Sunday?
Sundays are so hectic! The Boy and I share brunch in the kitchen, while making a grocery list, and off to the store we go! We’ve got quite the little routine. We spend the rest of the day hanging out, throwing a little TV or a movie in there somewhere, and prepping food, laundry and ourselves for the coming week.

7. What song would be the theme song to your life, right now?
“She’s a Wild One” by Faith Hill
8. Tell us about your absolute must-have item in your closet.
My floral wedges! I love, love, love them! Any excuse I find to wear them, I do.

9. Let us know some of your favorites. Favorite food, favorite book, favorite movie, favorite TV show, favorite color, favorite place to visit…now go!
Food: Anything Thai. Macaroni & cheese.
Book: Wuthering Heights (Emily Bronte), In Pharaoh’s Army (Tobias Wolff)
Movie: Dirty Dancing
TV Show: Grey’s Anatomy, Criminal Minds
Color: Purple
Place to visit: the beach

10. If you could switch lives with ANYONE for the day, who would it be and why?
I’m pretty fond of being myself, but I would like to be the bird that lives on my deck for a day.
11. What inspires you? {this can be about anything…blogging, life, crafts, etc..}
Love.

12. What is your favorite trend for the upcoming spring/summer months?
Prints: Cars, food. How fun!

13. Name a product you use daily and would recommend to your best friend.
Blistex Chapstick! Anyone who knows me, knows that I cannot leave the house without my chapstick, and I’ll nearly go into a conniption if I can’t find it.

14. What are your favorite types of blogs to read? (i.e. fashion, home decorating, crafting, running, cooking, etc…
I’ll read any type of blog, as long as the writer finds a way to draw me in. Most of what I read are lifestyle blogs that incorporate fashion, home decorating, snapshots of the day-to-day and cooking.

15. We all like to find some good new reads, so please share your daily reads! Give a shout out to your top 3 favorite blogs.

Happy Fathers Day

Happy Fathers Day to my wonderful hubby!! This is our first year at being parents and I have to say, I fall more and more in love with this man everyday I watch him take care of our son.
